I’m Not A Politician, I Just Play One In DC

WASHINGTON - JANUARY 09: President Elect Bara...

As I’ve mentioned before, topical humor has the lifespan of a fruit fly, but it is a good skill to develop. Here is a conservative slant on the cabinet.

Well “Hollywood” Obama has named Sanjay Gupta as his nominee for surgeon general. (Maybe Barrack-O  now prefers “Bollywood?”)

As a neurosurgeon-broadcaster-politician, Gupta is one of the new breed of government hyphenates. Long established in Hollywood (writer-director-actor-producer-etc) and favored by those with more titles than third world dictators, this takes us one step farther down the path of politics as entertainment.

Regarding other cabinet nominees, Housing Secretary nominee, (architect, deputy assistant secretary-commissioner) Shaun Donovan, as New York City Director of Housing -  “has managed a $7.5 billion plan designed to put a half-million New Yorkers in affordable housing by 2013.”

The math on this looks interesting – $7.5 billion divided by 500,000 people is only $15,000 per family. It would be hard to find a used mobile home in West Texas for 15 grand. And rumor has it that New York City is an expensive place to live.

Oh! Sorry! I missed something, this is “by 2013″ so that’s less than $3500 a year. Now that’s affordable housing baby! Looks like he got appointed to the cabinet just in time. No doubt a Republican is following him into the New York City post and will get the blame for “ruining” Donovan’s program.

CBS News says this regarding (first lietenant-congressman-chief of staff-study group leader) Leon Panetta the CIA Director nominee: “… clearly isn’t someone with much hands-on national security or intelligence experience. But no one disputes that the man knows government.” I wonder if Chris Matthews  gets “a thrill running up his leg” from this nominee. It certainly gives me chills. But in Obama’s hometown, Chicago, people who “know government” get things done, a highly valued talent.

Then there’s Timothy Geitner, nominee for Secretary of the Treasury. The BBC reports, He played a pivotal role in the intense negotiations which took place before Lehman Brothers went bankrupt…” What else can I add to that?

Thursday we open more doors in “Hollywood” Barack Obama’s cabinet

Hollywood would be apt for many pols, but Obama likes intellectuals, or so it seems.

I was mostly teasing, Dan. ;)

Sanjay Gupta may be in the news-entertainment business but I believe he is an excellent choice for that particular slot. He has the rare combination of intellect, knowledge and communication skills. My slant? Well, I was elected to office in SC several times as a Republican; my son was a paid staffer for the Obama campaign. Another rare combination, huh?
