Jury Duty – Oh! The Drama!

A baseball catcher prepares to receive the pitch

Image via Wikipedia

In which the plaintiff’s attorney gets rowdy.

Prevented by law from discussing the specifics…

Let me give you a hypothetical situation:

If a baseball catcher decides to play without a facemask and pads, whose fault is it if he gets hurt by a pitch?

If you are the plaitiff… you sue the pitcher of course.

And then waste a lot of people’s time with a stupid lawsuit trying to prove how sad it is that you were hurt by that pitched ball. You would get another job catching by lying on your job application, and then claim lost wages and loss of future income. And never, ever, ever admit your lack of common sense, lack or prudence and lack of basic intelligence had anything at all to do with the accident.

Which leads me to this story. Supply your own theatrical raising of voices and drama as we, the jury, witnessed today.

A defending attorney was cross examining a coroner. The attorney asked, “Before you signed the death certificate had you taken the man’s pulse?”
“No,” the coroner replied.

The attorney then asked, “Did you listen for a heart beat?”
The coroner said, “No.”

“Did you check for breathing?”, asked the attorney.
Again the coroner replied, “No.”

The attorney asked, “So when you signed the death certificate you had not taken any steps to make sure the man was dead, had you?”
The coroner, now tired of the brow beating said, “Well, let me put it this way. The man’s brain was sitting in a jar on my desk, but for all I know he could be out there practicing law somewhere.”

I’m sorry if this seems unfair: It’s really a shame how 99% of the lawyers give the whole profession a bad name.

Comic from SwapMeetDave.

This all may end tomorrow and then you can hear. “the rest of the story…”

Meanwhile there is still time to get in your own comments about trials, juries, and attorneys.

That’s an old joke that I have seen on the net for years. This sounds like you saw it yesterday or something. Weird.

    Jim,
I appreciate the coroner’s response as well.
    Jaz,
Basically there are no new jokes. Every joke and humorous story out there is a variation on a theme. Some people hear and remember and others do not. The idea is to use what you know and what you find in an appropriate way. I note from your blog that you have been posting for nearly two years, if you have been scanning the net for material all that time, I have no doubt that you have seen these particular stories before!
    Thanks for your comment!
