Using Humor in Business – When In Doubt, Leave It Out

The following is an email circulating before the Olympics in Beijing.

WIN 2 TICKETS ALL EXPENSES PAID INCLUDING AIR FARES TO THE 2008 OLYMPIC GAMES IN BEIJING, CHINA.

To participate is very easy, just view the attached photo, correctly
answer the following questions and send your answers to:
International Olympic Committee, Private Bag, Lausanne, Switzerland.

1. Which student seems to appear tired / sleepy?
2. Which ones are male twins?
3. Which ones are the female twins?
4. How many women are in the group?
5. Which one is the teacher?

Good Luck!

I guess you are not going either.

Appropriate for the office? For a presentation? For a speech? Doubtful.

With one exception: The safest target for humor is always yourself. So if you are an Asian then you could use this…

Maybe.

Even then; the audience, your status with the audience, the topic, any one of these could trigger the “when in doubt, leave it out” rule.  After all, if you don’t say it, you won’t regret it.

More later.

You are correct. That is exactly why I used it as an example of what not to do. Many people, would not realize it is probably photoshopped, and I have witnessed similarly tasteless examples of humor in business situations. Hence the title “When In Doubt, Leve It Out”. Thanks for your comment.

    Lucas,
Thanks for your comment. it is amazing what some people will say in public. Some things are better left unsaid even in private. I have also checked out your blog and subscribed.
